Ou paka pa la!

This is the slogan for Haiti’s Panté CondomsCreole for, “You have to be there.” And this phrase encapsulates exactly how I feel about Haiti 🙂

We had another illuminating focus group today with the women at POZ – the discussion about the female condom animations and storyboards provided us with rich insight that will fuel the development of this program, and we are so excited to send their feedback to our illustrators!

Immediately following the focus group, I spent some time with the women making Condom Art Pins and talking with them about some of the female condoms that are currently in development.  While the FC Female Condom is the only “internal condom” approved by the World Health Organization, several others are in the pipeline; among these upcoming FCs is the Cupid Condom, created by a condom manufacturer in India.

We left POZ this afternoon to visit some local markets with Dr. Marie Mercy, who organized our focus groups here.  I made contact with her organization while still in New York after reading about their 2008 UNDP Red Ribbon Award, and she and I created this program in Haiti via Skype and email.  It was a pleasure to finally meet her in person!  She took us to tiny shops where we could purchase local masks and Voodoo dolls…

This is a photo from Peiton-Ville, overlooking Canape-Vert – which literally translates to “Green-Couch.” I was told by our focus group moderator at POZ that the mountain sits so green in the distance that the locals simply decided to name it Green-Couch (only in Creole).  The slope that overlooks Canape-Vert is home to local artisans in small outdoor markets who create beautiful works of welded iron.

We spent the evening recording the Creole voiceover for our animation about proper anal use of the Female Condom – the video is coming soon!

And very early tomorrow morning, we depart for the Dominican Republic where we will begin our round of focus groups with INDAJOVEN.  Check back for more soon…
