I believe in honest, open relationships. Since our arrival in Vienna, we have had the pleasure of meeting with staff from Homosexuelle Initiative (HOSI) Wien.  HOSI Wien has brought the interests of the Austrian LGBT community to the political forefront since 1979.  They have fought for legal equality in all situations: the creation of an anti-discrimination law, registered partnerships, enhanced self-esteem and support upon coming out and the ongoing elimination of prejudices against the LGBT community are among their goals and accomplishments.

There is a fundamental human need for companionship, for a sympathetic ear, for reassurance, for hearing our feelings and sentiments echoed back, for touching and being touched. Being alone is sensory deprivation, slow torture, and our souls cry out for the company of a kindred spirit, for the comfort that only a friend or partner can give, for someone who can fill the emptiness, who can share the isolated moments of our existence.

Loneliness weakens the spirit. It consumes our strength and dims our inner flame. It tempts to descend us into a kind of gloomy rapture, depressed and paralyzed, yet at the same time glorying in our misery, suffering proudly in our own private hell. For all that, loneliness is a state of mind, a sickness of the soul rather than an external condition, and it is entirely within our power to fight it, and perhaps work toward healing it.

My love, my life!

Now I’m in the train, it’s not easy to write.  But I want to try to say you that my first hours without you are very hard, and all the time I think at you.  I would like to be with you to touch your hair, kiss your lips and smell your skin.  But it’s not possible and I just look for the window to forget for the moment your face, because I’m so sad.  This week was for me the paradise because I was with you during the night and during the day.  Now I just wait and keep your shadow in my head.

I love you.

A love letter, on love lost...

A love letter, on love lost...

I love you.  I know that it’s been a long, long time, but time hasn’t changed everything.  I know that I often fear that we’ve grown too far apart, gone down separate paths, but I still love you.  I know that you have someone new in your life (for a long while now) and that I have been with other women… but you are the only one I love, have ever loved.  If this comes at a bad time, I am not sorry.

Love is a beautiful feeling.  Love is the sum of everything positive in my life – and you have always been the fuel – always in my thoughts, the source of intense, indescribable feelings – even when I’m all the way around the world.  When I think of sacrificing my personal wishes and dreams, so that I can help fulfill the dreams of my mate, and create new dreams together – that’s you.

I don’t regret that we split up – we’ve both had to grow.  I am so far away, and all I think about is getting back to the states and going to New York to try and earn your love again.  Maybe you’ve developed that love for someone else.  That’s not a bad thing.  My love for you, the love that brings a smile to my face, is the loved that is most purely reciprocated by your happiness.  I want for you to be wherever, and with whomever you find joy in your life.

If you ever one day allow me to woo you – I will do whatever it takes.  I would build us a home and grow us food.  And we could just be together, sleep in the same bed every night.  And we could travel the world, or settle in the country.  If you wanted to stay in the city – I could do the suit and tie thing – work and save money, just walk the streets with you.

In my quest to find myself, it becomes less and less a desire to do things, or be at certain places… but now I am more interested in who I’m spending my life with.  And I want to get to know you all over again.

It’s quite likely that I’ve ruined our chances of being together a thousand times over.  All I can say is that I needed this time to prove myself worthy and ready to be the type of man that you deserve.  I just want you to know that I love you, always.  Not a jealous love, or a selfish or tortured love, but just a happy love.

And even if my dreams stay always that… the love you have generated within me will be the reason that I will be able to share love with another.  If our time together is forever over, then I’ll always look back with a smile… but every song I listen to reminds me of you as if it was written about us.  I imagine what our children might look like, or imagine us cooking a huge meal together with great music throughout the entire house and making a mess and cleaning it up.  I imagine for richer or for poorer.  I imagine good times and bad.

I truly love you.  I just wanted you to know, that’s all.

Got latex?

If you or your partner dislike the smell and taste of your average latex condom, try using condoms that are flavored and scented.  Designed for protection during oral sex, varieties include fruit flavors, such as strawberry, mango, lychee and durian; or even flavors like corn, coffee, ice cream… and chocolate 😉

I do not usually recommend using flavored condoms for vaginal sex, because the flavored lubricant may be an irritant for some women… however if you are going to have vaginal intercourse and a flavored condom is the only protection that you have, then by all means use it!

Friday 29 January 2010

In the two weeks leading up to Valentines Day, I have decided to intersperse the daily Safer Sexy Tidbits with some of my favorite love letters I have received over the years.  I will, of course, disguise each letter enough so that the sender can remain anonymous 😉

Tonight I opened up an old notebook – one of those square, spiral notebooks with an elastic band that keeps it closed.  The cover of the notebook has a sticker on it that says, “Made from recycled soda bottles,” and I found this love letter (transcribed below) tucked in between the white, lined pages.

If you have someone to celebrate with this Valentine’s Day, I wholeheartedly encourage you to write them – I mean truly hand write them – a love letter.  It’s a dying art, and I am certain that your loved one would greatly appreciate your reviving it in their name.

If you don’t happen to have a special someone this Valentine’s Day, then read over some of the love letters (or emails – or texts – or Tweets) from your past.  Remember that you are lovable. You were loved once, and you can look forward to being loved – and to loving – again.  There’s no time like the present.

And with that being said… the first love letter:

A love letter, written from a distance

A love letter, written from a distance

My dear angel,

Oh how I’m counting the minutes until I find you in the airport and lock lips with your precious body in my arms.

I’d have killed to be here with you.  You and I in the mountainous desert.  We need to be somewhere besides the concrete metropolis we live in.  In fact, I’m sure we’re destined to travel far and wide together.  I want to go away and summer with you… Can you imagine?  Ah, what a breath of fresh air to get away for a bit.  I know how you value getting away.  I feel the same way, except it would be even better with you on my arm.

Thank you for all the late-night calls; for helping me by giving me the part of home I missed the most – you – every night.  And did you know that you were traveling with me in my mind and heart too?  You were.

Natural Sensations, unfurled

Natural Sensations, unfurled

The Natural Sensations Panty Condom, like the Silk Parasol (see my Tidbit from Monday 25 January) is designed to be worn as an undergarment and provides a barrier both inside and outside of the body.  The Natural Sensation has a replaceable pantyliner that houses a condom made of a thin, synthetic resin.  The condom is activated, if you will, by the penis (or dildo, or finger…).  The panty itself is reusable, made of a sleek combination of cotton and nylon.

Cotton, nylon and synthetic resin... very conveniently Safer Sexy ;-)

As promised… presenting the Cupid Female Condom!

The Cupid, pretty in pink ;-)

The Cupid, pretty in pink

This is one of the newest developments in FCs, made in India from a natural, pink latex. It has a sponge at the closed end and a more rigid outer rim, which makes it much easier for the penetrative partner to enter into the condom correctly. This type of rim is also much less likely to accidentally enter into the body.

The Cupid is currently seeking WHO approval and will soon make its debut in India. And a sneak-peak for my readers: a Cupid FC package contest is coming soon! Stay tuned to the blog for more details as soon as they are available 😉

Q: You’ve mentioned 3 different kinds of female condoms on your blog… Are there any more than that???

A: There sure are. The first female condoms approved by the World Health Organization and the USFDA were the FC1 & FC2, but there are several more female condoms up-and-coming in the global pipeline. Tonight, let’s discuss The Woman’s Condom from PATH:

The Woman’s Condom is seeking to improve upon the two available female condoms and was developed with a user-driven product design. It is made of a thin polyurethane film and has a rounded cap for insertion into the body, making it similar to inserting a tampon without an applicator. This cap is made of polyvinly alcohol and will dissolve quickly after insertion, and the tiny dots of foam closer to the opening gently adhere to the inside of the body and help to hold the condom in its proper place during sexual activity. The Woman’s Condom is ready for a combined Phase 2/3 clinical trial, the last step before US Food & Drug Administration approval.

Later this week, we’ll explore the Cupid Female Condom! Stay tuned…

So, to clarify a statement in the video above: condoms can also be made from animal products, such as lambskin*. Although lambskin condoms are effective in pregnancy prevention, they are not to be used to prevent sexually transmitted infections, such as HIV.

If you would like to try a lambskin condom, you should:

1) be in a monogamous, heterosexual relationship
2) have the same definition of “monogamy” as your partner, and
3) be tested and knowledgeable about your STI status

If you can, I definitely recommend using latex condoms – they are widely available and come in a variety of sizes, shapes, colors, textures, flavors and even with enhanced lubricants.

If you are latex-sensitive but still need to guard against sexually transmitted infections, condoms made of synthetic materials are your best option. Stay tuned for more on synthetics…

*Lambskin condoms are actually made from a naturally-occurring pouch in the intestines of a sheep. They are lubricated with a jelly-type lubricant and have pores that are small enough to contain sperm cells, but too large to stop the cells that cause sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.

Today’s Safer Sexy Tidbit is this: Sometimes life happens, and you won’t always be able to do everything you want to do… like post to you the Safer Sexy Tidbits section of your blog 😉 Be kind to yourself and always try your best. Know that you are in a true position to be beneficial to others when you are feeling good about yourself, so find time to take a break when you need it.

Even if it feels like you “should” force yourself to forge on, it’s not always the wisest decision. Take a cue from trusted sources and relax – catch up with old friends, watch a movie and sit on a roof for awhile. It’ll do you lots of good.

Thanks for sticking with me… xojl

Yes, I do have advice for you 🙂 Listen to music – dig up old CDs, old playlists and mix tapes (yes, on cassette) because these songs will remind you of where you come from and what you believe in.

Practice smiling at strangers, especially the elderly and little children. Do something unexpected at least once a week. Go to the museum or the theatre at least once a month… You live in New York, for goodness’ sake! And unabashedly celebrate every happy moment you have, even if you think it may be fleeting.

“Be brave, and mighty forces will come to your aid.” You can do this 😉

Much love,
Joy Lynn, circa 2003

Q: I’ve never used a female condom, and now I’m confused because I saw that there are two different ones for sale online here in CA. The package looks the same, so what is the difference between the female condom and the female condom 2?

A: Great question 🙂

The FC1 (originally known as the Reality Female Condom) was the first female condom available in the US. The FC1 is made from polyurethane – a synthetic material that (unlike latex) is hypoallergenic.*

Polyurethane is heat conductive and warms to your body temperature, so it can feel much more natural for many people. Unlike latex, polyurethane can also be used safely with oil-based substances.** On the downside, polyurethane condoms are extremely expensive, they often have a prominent seam and have been known to be a bit noisy. To address these issues, the Female Health Company has developed the FC2.

The FC2 female condom

The FC2 female condom

The FC2 female condom is made out of nitrile – it is still hypoallergenic, but it is much less expensive to manufacture. The FC2 is softer, more pliable, and seamless; this can make it more comfortable for both penetrative and receptive partners. The FC2 female condom has also achieved both WHO and FDA approval, so it is now available in the United States.***

Female condoms are different than male condoms, because female condoms are made to be worn along the inside of the body. As every person’s body is different, it is important to try a variety of products to find what feels best for you 🙂 There are several other female condoms up-and-coming in the global pipeline, so…

Happy hunting! xojl

*Some people are latex sensitive, or have an allergy to latex. If this is the case, then condoms made out of synthetic materials (like polyurethane, nitrile or polyisoprene) are the best option.

**It is important to remember that oil-based substances should not be used with latex barriers!

***Currently, these two female condoms are the only two approved by the World Health Organization and the US Food and Drug Administration; therefore they are the only FCs available in the United States.

Q: I just bought my 1st vibrator… I’ve never used one before and I’m feeling a little intimidated. Any advice???

A: Thanks so much for your question. Have fun & enjoy! Vibrators are a part of a normal, healthy lifestyle, and they can help you discover exactly what makes you feel good. They encourage imagination and fantasy and can add more variety to the sexual experience for both individuals as well as couples. Self pleasure and masturbation is key to a healthy sex life because, once you know what you enjoy, then you can better communicate that to your partner. The use of a vibrator can also allow you to play around and experiment with how you achieve orgasm, without the pressure of needing to please anyone but yourself. Orgasms have been widely reported to relieve stress and tension in both men and women. Achieving orgasm has even been known to greatly relieve menstrual cramps before and during a woman’s monthly period!

The first time(s) you use your vibrator, try it as a massager on any area of your body that could use a little bit of stimulation. Turn the vibrator on to the lowest strength setting. Feel it in your hands then, whenever you feel ready, move it to more sensitive parts of your body that are not as accustomed to being frequently touched or stimulated: your neck, the inside of your arm, your inner thigh. Gradually move it to your more intimate areas – whenever you feel comfortable and inspired, try increasing the strength settings and experimenting with different modes if they are available.

Click here to read about the mainstreaming of vibrator use, a la The New York Times. Every person’s body is difference, so remember to take the time to really experiment with what feels good to you!

Have fun and be safe,
Joy Lynn

Q: Hey Joy Lynn – my friend asked me how long you have to wait to get tested after having sex… Can you tell me?

A: Some doctors say that you should wait about one month after sex before being tested, others say that you should not delay if you think you might have contracted a sexually transmitted infection (STI). It is my belief that you should see your health care provider as soon as possible, to ease your mind and so that you have the opportunity to speak to a professional directly (and immediately) about your specific concerns.

Bear in mind that there is no one test for all STIs. Some STIs can be detected in your blood, others in your urine and others by taking cultures (fluid samples with a cotton swab) from your mouth, vagina, urethra or anus. You should always ask your health care provider what you are being tested for and also let him or her know what you want to be tested for. For example, people in the US are not automatically tested for HIV – you need to ask specifically for this test, then give permission to have it done.

If you are sexually active, you should get tested regularly for STIs even if you don’t have any symptoms, because many STIs are asymptomatic and people often have no idea they are infected (and therefore pass these STIs along to others).

I hope this is helpful 🙂 Please feel free to pass along this email, and don’t hesitate to contact me with any other questions you or your friends may have.

Keep in touch,
Joy Lynn

Every condom you will find on the continent of Antarctica is imported (click here to read about the 16,500 condoms sent to a research base that houses the largest community there – 125 people). So if you find yourself traveling to the continent during their 6 months of darkness, I know just the type of condom that can help light your way…

Any brand of glow-in-the-dark condom will do, but make sure that it is not just a novelty condom, because they do not protect against sexually transmitted infections or unintended pregnancy. You want to go with a strong, reliable and purposely built prophylactic like the one featured in the video above, or the Night Light Condom – it gets a thumbs-up from the American Food & Drug Administration 😉

And now we’re going Brazilian!

Get Reddy!

Get Reddy!

The Reddy is a natural latex female condom available in South America. With a sponge nestled at its closed end, the shaft of the Reddy is a touch more shallow than the other FCs but, as it is made of a natural latex, it has a supple elasticity that enhances sensation for the partner wearing it as well as the partner entering it. The Reddy does not make the noises that some people experience with the synthetic female condoms, so the safer sexy soundtrack is left completely up to you 😉 The outer rim is a well-defined triangle, making it much easier for the penetrating partner to hit his mark! For more information on female condoms, you can scroll down to my post on Africa and visit the Prevention Now! website – they just can’t wait to spread the word on safer sexy…

So we have celebrated the Trojan Ecstasy in North America and the FC2 Female Condom in Africa (scroll down to view original posts); and today we travel to the continent of Asia to rejoice in the fact that, in the far east, thin is in 😉

Okamoto 0.03 with aloe - the thinnest latex condom in the world

Okamoto 0.03 with aloe - the thinnest latex condom in the world

Asia is not only the home of the thinnest latex on the planet, but they have harnessed the technology to produce the thinnest polyurethane as well. Japanese made condoms are considered around the globe to be some of the strongest and most reliable sheaths, giving them the bragging rights to boast that they are the closest thing to “nothing at all.” I find that very safer sexy…

Why use polyurethane, you may ask? Some people may be latex sensitive (have an allergy to latex), and polyurethane condoms are a hypoallergenic option for both pleasure and protection; they are heat-conductive and warm to your body temperatures, and should polyurethane come into contact with oil it will still remain in tact (unlike latex). More on oil-based substances in later Tidbits.

As the minutes are ticking away towards midnight, I will leave you with one of my favorite synthetic moments in the form of a YouTube link. For my regular readers, this is a re-run — an oldie, but goody!

Until tomorrow… xojl

Yesterday we talked about the Trojan Ecstasy Condom, a wild innovation in pleasure for folks in North America (scroll down to view the original post). Today we turn to Africa and tip our Safari hats to the FC2 Female Condom.

Day 2: A Condom for Every Continent! 7 Condoms to Peak Your Interest in 2010

Africa is in possession of the FC2, a sexier and more sensuous model of condom that is made to be worn along the inside of the body. That’s right, boys – your rod can ride bareback!

The FC2 female condom - soft, strong & safer sexy

The FC2 female condom - soft, strong & safer sexy

Just squeeze the flexible, inner ring and slide it into the vagina; take your finger and, along the inside of the condom, gently push that inner ring up as far as it will go. The soft outer ring will let him know how to aim for just the right spot… and once he’s in, he will find himself surrounded by soft, sensuous, heat-conducting material. This condom will take your combined body heat and multiply it to an absolutely orgasmic temperature. The inner ring will hit her g-spot and rub just the right place on the head of his penis. The outer ring will stimulate her clitoris… and best of all, when using an FC2, he doesn’t have to wear a thing!

For anal sex, just take out the inner ring. Pull the FC2 over your finger or your penis and gently enter the anus. The outside ring will continue to gyrate along the outside of your bodies, letting you know that he has hit his mark.

And great news for folks out of Africa: the FC2 is now available in 77 countries worldwide! For more juicy details, visit http://www.fc2femalecondom.com
